1906 photos of John Deere Plow Co Root Vandervoort R&V gas engine tractor Kansas
Rare set of original photos mounted to a photo album page measuring 7×10 featuring John Deere Plow Co. Of Kansas City building, Kansas. Photos show a company built gas engine tractor which is a Root & Vandervoort (R&V) side shaft engine mounted on probably a Success manure spreader to power the “tractor”. The tractor concept originated by using early stationary engine rigs like this to power themselves from one job on the farm to the next. This tractor appears to be pulling a parade / advertising float in one of the photos. Sign on top of the tractor reads John Deere Plow Co. 13th and Hickory, which is the address of the John Deere Plow Company building in Kansas City, Missouri. Bottom sign reads “Manure Spreaders Gasoline Engines”. There is some lite writing between the top photos and a date on the bottom that is hard to read, but I believe reads Oct – 1906. This would seem to align with the date of the R&V engine featured in the photo.
